1917 Tanganyika - BELGIAN OCCUPATION.  1917 cover front only sent registered to Elisabethville, Belgian Congo, franked at 40c with a 5c, 15c and pair of 10c, all cancelled by violet B.P.C.V. P.K. No. 4  23 FEB 17 datestamps. A blank Congo Belge registration label with POSTES MILIT 4 / LAGERPOST 4 typed in is at the lower left., and an OCCUPATION B P / COMMANDEMENT DU / CERCLE d UDJIDJI / CENSURE MILITAIRE four line cachet has been struck in violet on the front. 1898 Bermuda - 1898 envelope to England endorsed at the top J. Shaw on H. M .Ship Cordelia, North America, West Indies that has a G.B. 1d lilac cancelled on arrival LONDON AU 17 98. The Commanding Officer has initialled the cover at the lower left for the sailor to get the1d sailors concession rate. A Burton-on-Trent AU 17 98 arrival c.d.s. is on the back of the cover. H.M.S. Cordelia was a Comus-class corvette, launched in 1881. At the time this was written she was in Bermuda.    1898 Bermuda

1878 Bermuda - 1878 soldiers concession rate letter to Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, from Pte. I. Hughes, H. Compy. 1/19th Regt, with a 1d tied by a barred 8 canceller of Warwick West. An oval ST. GEORGESAUG 21 1878 datestamp is on the front of the cover which has the signature of the Lieut. Colonel of the 1/19th Regiment at the lower left, allowing the 1d soldiers concession rate. A Great Yarmouth SP 7 78 arrival c.d.s. is on the back. Warwick West was the main army camp and firing range in the 1870s, but the post office there only received a datestamp in 1879. Prior to that they had only the numeral 8 canceller. A fine and very rare soldiers concession rate cover. 1878 Bermuda

1916 Tanganyika - 1916 picture post card ( View of Hotel Moshi, Kilimanjaro) to Scotland from a soldier in the Field Postal Corps, 1st Mounted Brigade, endorsed On Active Service, with an F.P.O. NO. 71 25 MA 16. datestamp. A hexagonal OPENED BY CENSOR /  UNDER MARTIAL LAW cachet is on the card, which has a few minor edge faults. F.P.O. No 71 was most probably around Salaita at that time. After the defeat at the Battle of Salaita Hill on 12 February 1916, which was the first large-scale engagement to involve British, South African, Rhodesian and Indian troops, the allied troops withdrew, but in early March occupied the town after a further engagement. This cancel is known used there for a short period from 10th March. A scarce card from there.1916 Tanganyika

The cover has been opened and resealed with censor tape at the left and a violet boxed Passed By Censor V 100 applied. A further large boxed Passed By Censor handstamp is also on the front of the cover. On the back are transit and arrival cancels. As the censor tape is over a Samarai 5 FEB cancel, the cover would probably have been censored either there or at Port Moresby.  Bwagaoia is on Misima Island, about 160 miles east of Papua, New Guinea mainland. A scarce censored cover from this town.1941 Papua

1901 Boer War - 1901 cover to Harrismith, Orange River Colony, with a Natal 1d cancelled LADYSMITH 1 OC 1901. A PRISONER OF WAR / PASSED CENSOR / LADYSMITH handstamp is on the front of the cover, on the back is a Harrismith 2 OC 01 arrival c.d.s. The Ladysmith P.O.W. Camp was known as Tin Town and was one of the prisons that held Rebel prisoners. Many of these were Natal Burghers who the British did not know whether they were traitors or Prisoners of War. As Natal was a British Colony, many Afrikaaners who went from there to fight for the Boers were regarded as traitors and tried as such. John Bland, the sender of this letter, was interred in Ladysmith for a number of months before being moved. 1901 Boer War
