MILAN, ITALY. On 23 December 1951, while making an instrument landing, the flight from Shannon, Ireland, to Milan, landed by error 8 kms away from the airport, crashed and burst into flames. All passengers escaped but a large part of the mail was burnt. Recovered mail was, in this case, forwarded in an ambulance cover that had a violet four line explanatory cachet applied (Contiene corrispondenz danneggiate / ricuperta nell’ incidente / all’ aereo New York – Milano / del 23 dicembre 1951) Uncommon.
