1936 MAIL VAN FIRE. On November 4th 1936 a fire broke out in a mail van on route to Los Angeles airport. This bank envelope to San Francisco has a cachet ‘DAMAGED IN MAIL CHUTE’ with the ‘MAIL CHUTE’ crossed out and ‘FIRE’ written in pencil. The cover was forwarded in a Post Office Department ambulance envelope. A three line ‘DAMAGED / BY / FIRE’ cachet has been applied. An uncommon pair of covers.
