1920 South West Africa / South Africa - 1920 parcel piece to Cape Town, that would have contained diamonds, that has a block of six 10/-, an irregular block of three 5/- and a pair of 1/-, paying a £3-17-00 rate, the stamps cancelled LUDERITZBUCHT 20 JAN 20. The parcel was then forwarded on to a bank in Johannesburg, and a vertical strip of three £1, a 10/-, a 5/- and a pair of 1/- were affixed, again paying the £3-17-00 rate, cancelled CAPE TOWN 26 JA 20. A remarkable item and one of the few surviving diamond parcel pieces in existence.

1933 South Africa - 1933 envelope to Pinelands, Cape Town, endorsed at the top Per Rail Letter, with two 2d cancelled by oval S.A.R. - S.A.S. NAAUWPOORT. 253 / 18 NOV 33 cancellers. A Claremont 20 NOV 33 datestamp is on the front of the cover. The standard rate would have been 2d but an additional charge of 2d was applied for the rail letter fee.

1942 South Africa - 1942 censored envelope to a soldier, Signalman M. Mac Askill, at H.Q. 55. Infantry Brigade, Army P.O. Franked with a 1d and a ½d cancelled Cape Town 13 August 42. A purple boxed IT IS REGRETTED THAT / THIS ITEM COULD NOT BE / DELIVERED BECAUSE THE / ADDRESSEE IS REPORTED / PRISONER OF WAR. On the back of the cover are various datestamps , the last being Cape Town 21 V 43. It is possible that the addressee was captured at Tobruk, which fell to the Axis forces in July 1942. There were many South African regiments there at that time.

A straight line PASSED BY CENSOR handstamp has been applied in South Africa, but on transit through England the cover was again censored and a boxed HOSTILE COUNTRIES CENSOR / SALISBURY HOUSE, LONDON. cachet applied. A rare censor cachet that I have never seen before, presumably applied as the letter was from a German P.O.W. (?) On the back of the cover are New York 11.11.15. transit and Detroit NOV 12 15 arrival cancels. A rare cover in fine condition.

1925 South African Train Fire - 1925 envelope from England to Port Elizabeth, South Africa, that has scorched edges after being in a fire on a train at KRUIDFONTEIN, a station between Laingsburg and Beaufort West in the Cape Province on 18 May 1925. A bilingual purple boxed DAMAGED BY FIRE / BESKADIGD DEUR BRAND. handstamp was applied to the cover after it, along with the other surviving mail was returned to Cape Town. 197 bags of mail were destroyed in this incident. A scarce item.

1918 South Africa - 1918 envelope to Sweden franked with a pair of 1ds and a ½d tied by two strikes of the very scarce CEZA DE 3 18 datetamps. On the back is an arrival cancel of 26.1.19. Ceza was a very small village in Zululand, near Melmoth and Mahlabatini. The post office opened in 1904 and a Mission Hospital was opened in 1910 – although the first doctor only arrived in the mid 1930s! Early mail from this village is particularly scarce.
