1862 Cape of Good Hope -  1862 cover to Ennis, Ireland, endorsed at the top Pr Mail Steamer 22 May 1863 with a 6d pale rose  lilac (S.G.7) good to very large margins, but just touched at upper left, lightly tied by part of a triangular cancel. London and Ennis cancels are on the front of the cover, on the back is a Cape Town MY 22 1862 cancel. Few edge faults to the cover.

1898 Cape of Good Hope / Bechuanaland - 1898 envelope to Rietfontein via Zwartmodder with a 1d cancelled by a barred 966 obliterator with an UPPINGTON JY 27 98 datestamp alongside. On the back is a MIER AU 1 98 transit cancel. The sender was Ernst Schroder, Attorney, with his embossed details on the back flap. This cover would have been sent by camel post . The majority of camel post mail originates in Rietfontein and Mier and it is very unusual to see one going the other way!

1904 Cape of Good Hope - 1904 picture post card (North Jetty, Port Elizabeth) to England with a 1d cancelled by the KLIPPLAAT DE 21 04 1094 duplex canceller. Klipplaat is in the Jansenville district of the Eastern Cape, and this numeral 0194 barred canceller is only known used between the end of 1904 and 1907. A small tear at the top of the card but a scarce proving strike.

1908 Cape of Good Hope - 1908 cover to Uniondale with a 1d tied by a superb strike of the rare ROOI RIVER FE 4 08 datestamp. A Uniondale Road FE 6 08 arrival cancel is on the back. Rooi River was a farming community west of Buffelsklip in the Uniondale district. Although the postal agency opened in 1895, the earliest date of use, prior to this cover being found is 1924 (Post Offices of the Cape of Good Hope by Frescura) A very fine and rare cancel, the only one I have seen from this postal agency.

1901 Boer War / Cape of Good Hope - 1901 censored envelope to a prisoner of war J M Kell, at Diyatalawa P.O.W. Camp, Ceylon, bearing three 1ds cancelled by the scarce HENNING 27 JA 01 datestamps. The cover has a British censor seal and an oval Diyatalawa censor cachet. Henning was a telegraph office on the railway line near Rosmead Junction in the Steynsburg District, Eastern Cape. It no longer exists today. A very scarce cancellation.

1906 Cape of Good Hope - 1906 double rate envelope to Germany bearing five 1ds, tied by barred 295 obliterators with a SARON JY 3 06 datestamp to the left. A Barmen arrival c.d.s. is on the back. Saron was established in 1846 as a Rhenish Missionary Society Station on the farm Aan de Leeuweklip near Tulbach in the Western Cape. This is a very late usage of the barred numeral canceller, 7 years later than the latest recorded date by Frescura in his book The Post Offices Of The Cape Of Good Hope.

On the front of the card is an arrival strike of the very rare JAN FOURIES KRAAL SP 1 11 single circle datestamp. This postal agency was on a farm 21 miles west of Outshoorn in the Eastern Cape. All that is known of this postal agency is it opened in 1881 and had a numeral 310 canceller issued to it. A very rare canceller and the first time I have seen it !

A King Williams Town arrival cancel of the same date is on the front of the card. This card is illustrated by Putzel in his book Postmarks of South Africa and it would appear as though it is the only time he recorded this cancellation. Debe Nek, 12 miles north west of King Williams Town, was the site on which the Battle of Amalinda took place in October 1818 between Ngqika, the chief of Xhosaland and his uncle Ndlambe. This exceptional battle lasted from midday to nightfall, and was fought with such unusual ferocity that it takes a special place in the history of Xhosa warfare. It resulted in the defeat of Ngqika and the death of 500 of his followers. A very rare cancellation.

1902 Cape of Good Hope / Boer War - 1902 censored envelope to Sea Point with a 1d cancelled DREW JU 6 2. The cover was opened by the censor and resealed with tape at the top and a Swellendam censor cachet applied that has the censors initials in the middle. A Swellendam JU 6 02 datestamp is on the back of the cover. Drew was a very small hamlet about 13 miles west of Swellendam. Today nothing exists of of the place! A fine strike of this scarce canceller with few existing on cover.
