1879 Zulu War - 1879 stampless envelope to England with a No.72 9/4/79 canceller of STANGER, where it entered the postal system on the front. On the back are Durban 10/4/79 and London MY 15 79 transit and arrival cancels. In the lower left corner are the initials CBV. This was Lieutenant Courtenay Bourchier Vyvyan, of the 3rd Regiment (Buffs) who was involved in the defence of the besieged town of Eshowe from 28 January to 3 April. This letter was posted immediately after the relief of that town. A rare cover.

1879 Zulu War - 1879 envelope to England bearing a Transvaal 6d cancelled b an 11 in concentric circles with a UTRECHT Z.A.R. AP 23 79 datestamp alongside. In the lower left corner is a manuscript Free through colony / G.S. 4Th Regt. A Petersfield MY 31 70 arrival cancel is on the back. This cover was sent by Sgt. George Smith was a defender at Rourkes Drift during the battle there on January 22  23 1879. A very fine cover.

Captain Cramer was present at both Gingindlovu and Eshowe during the War. A very fine cover from this conflict.

1879 Zulu War - 1879 stampless soldiers letter to Oxford, England, endorsed at the top From Pvt S Paintin, On Active Service, Africa and countersigned at the lower left corner by Capt. H. S. Smith, Commanding 3rd 60th. The cover entered the postal system at Stanger with a 72 cancel dated 11. 4. 1879. Durban 12/4/79 and Oxford MY 16 79 datestamps are on the back of the cover. A 1 handstamp was applied to indicate the money due for a soldiers letter. The 3rd Company of the 60th Regiment was part of Col. Crealocks Relief Force for Eshowe. They remained entrenched at Gingindlovu after their victorious battle on 2 April, to protect the returning relieved troops heading for Fort Pearson. A very scarce cover.

1879 Zululand / Great Britain - ZULU WAR.  1879 incoming envelope from London, addressed to Captain Edward B Evans, 10th Battery, 7th Brigade, Natal, the 1d and 6d embossed stamps cancelled by LONDON MY 8 79 W 19 duplex cancellers. There are no arrival markings. Captain Evans was commissioned as an officer in the Royal Artillery in 1867. In 1876 he served with a battery that was posted to Mauritius. In early 1879 his regiment were sent to South Africa after the defeat of the British at Isandalwala. He took part in the latter part of the Zulu War and was at Ulundi in the final conflict in July 1879. At the beginning of 1880 he returned to England and took up an appointment as Adjutant of Artillery Militia at Wicklow, Ireland. A fine incoming cover to an officer in the Zulu War, even though there are no arrival datestamps.

On the back of the over are Eshowe AP 19, Durban AP 20 and Aylesbury MY 20 95 transit and arrival cancels. Nkandhla was a small village in the centre of Zululand, a little over 100 miles east of Ladysmith. Mail from Nkandhla is very uncommon.

1893 - 1893 d reply paid card (H & G 3) locally used to Isandhlwana, with a very fine strike of the very rare NONDWENI, ZULULAND 11 JUN 93 purple oval datestamp, which also cancels the reply half of the card. The message asks when the sender can meet Mr Lurring, the recipient of the card, in Vryheid. Although there are a few slight traces of foxing, this is probably the finest of the very few known used examples of this card. An item of major importance, Ex Wilson Wong and John Robson collections where it sold for 2860 in 1992. A B.P.A. 1999 certificate accompanies the card.

On 27 June 1891 a proclamation in the Natal Government Gazette authorised the use of this stamp for postal purposes. Although it is often seen as a used stamp, it is rarely seen used on cover.
