1900 Mexican Shipwreck - “MEXICAN” 1900.
At 2 am on the 5th April 1900, the Union Castle liner “Mexican”, which had left Cape Town the previous day bound for Southampton, was sunk after a colliding with the British” Transport “Winkfield” during a thick fog, eighty miles from port. An official Post Office notice issued in Cape Town stated that all the mail was saved except one bag of registered letters bound for London, one of ‘English letters with general addresses’ and one hundred and forty five bags of newspapers. Salvaged mail from this shipwreck received either a red two line hand stamp in English, or a black four line hand stamp in German. This cover to GIBRALTAR, a very unusual destination, has a red RECOVERED FROM / WRECK OF MEXICAN cachet. The backflap is missing but the Gibraltar MY 2 00 arrival cancel is on the back.

The cover has been censored and resealed with Boer tape (Seal Type 3) and tied by an oval P.R.C. Johannesburg 1 NOV 1900 h/s. A Carnarvon NO 9 00 arrival cancel is on the back. It would appear as though some old captured stock of these censor tapes were used when there was a shortage of British censor tape. A very uncommon item.

1901 Boer War - 1901 cover to Harrismith, Orange River Colony, with a Natal 1d cancelled LADYSMITH 1 OC 1901. A PRISONER OF WAR / PASSED CENSOR / LADYSMITH handstamp is on the front of the cover, on the back is a Harrismith 2 OC 01 arrival c.d.s. The Ladysmith P.O.W. Camp was known as Tin Town and was one of the prisons that held Rebel prisoners. Many of these were Natal Burghers who the British did not know whether they were traitors or Prisoners of War. As Natal was a British Colony, many Afrikaaners who went from there to fight for the Boers were regarded as traitors and tried as such. John Bland, the sender of this letter, was interred in Ladysmith for a number of months before being moved.

On the back of the cover is a purple double oval BURGHER CAMP IRENE, Censored cachet. This is one of the scarcer Burgher Camp cachets. The addressee Pieter Hendrik van der Merwe was from Stamprietfontein, Potchefstroom. He was 45 years old when captured at Paardeberg on 27 February 1900 when General Cronje surrendered. A fine cover with this scarce Burgher camp cachet.

He was fighting the British at the siege of Kimberley when this was written. A HAENERTSBURG 10 FEB 00 arrival c.d.s. is on the back. He was 43 years old and captured at Paardeberg on the Modder River in the Orange Free State near Kimberley, on 27 February 1900 when General Cronje surrendered with 4105 soldiers.  A rare cover from a Boer soldier in the Kimberley campaign.

A blue D crayon Boer censor mark is on the front along with a violet Censor Prisoners of War handstamp. The cover had censor tape applied in Pretoria (12 DEC) and again in Durban (23 DEC). 1900 Boer War - 1900 envelope to TASMANIA from a Pte. H Chapman, 2nd T. I. B.  / O.A.S. - S. Africa, franked with a pair of O.F.S. overprinted  ½ds, a 1d and a 3d, cancelled by FIELD P.O. BRITISH ARMY S. AFRICA AP 18 datestamps. At this time this canceller was in use at the Advanced Depot, Bloemfontein, which opened there on 14 April. On the back of the cover are Launceston MY 13 and Zeehan MY 17 00 transit and arrival cancels. A fine and scarce cover from a member of the Tasmanian Contingent of which there were only 126 officers and troops.

A manuscript blue crayon G (Gezien – Seen) censor mark is on the front of the cover, which was from Capt. Dick of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. On the back of the cover are Lourenco Marques 28 MAR, and Leamington AP 26 00 transit and arrival cancels. It was unusual for mail from P.O.W.s to have stamps on and also not to have any other censor cachets other than this manuscript G !
