1897 Sudan - 1897 envelope from the 1897-98 Nile Expedition to Kildare, Ireland, franked with a pair of 2m and a pair of 3m, (SG 3& 4) cancelled by the very rare BERBER undated canceller. Wadi Halfa 20 DE Cairo 23 XII 97 transit cancels are on the back. Only two or three examples of this Berber undated canceller are recorded on cover. A rare cover.

1898 Sudan - 1898 envelope endorsed at the top Nile Field Force to London bearing a 1p cancelled HALFA 23 VI 98.  Alexandrie 1 VII 98 and London JY 7 98 cancels are on the back. In 1898 an expedition under General Kitchener was organised to defeat the Mahdi once and for all. The force consisted of 8,200 British soldiers and 17,600 Egyptian and Sudanese soldiers commanded by British officers. The Mahdist forces (sometimes called the Dervishes) were more numerous, numbering more than 60,000 warriors, but lacked modern weapons. They were defeated at the battle of Atbara in April 1898 and the Anglo-Egyptian forces then went on to capture Omdurman, the Mahdist capital in September 1898. This cover was sent during this campaign.

1886 Sudan - 1886 Soldiers and Seamens 9 pies concessionary rate envelope to Karachi, India, cancelled FIELD P. O. 19 JAN 86. It has been countersigned at the left by Capt. Orr, Senior Coast Officer. On the back is a Sea Post Office E 15 JAN 86 transit and a Karachi 28 JAN 86 arrival cancel. On 2nd March 1885 a brigade of 3000 Indian troops arrived at Suakin. This Field Force was disbanded in November but some troops remained as part of the garrison.

The envelope has been correctly countersigned by the Lieutenant of the Transport Office. On the reverse are Bombay and Fort Bombay datestamps 18 JL 96. Base Office B was on Quarantine Island from 21 June to 25 September 1896. Fine.

On the reverse is a manuscript endorsement Written from Atbara Fort on way to Omdurman with the 2nd British Brigade, Aug 14 98. A Wadi Halfa S.P.S. 17 VIII and Woking AU 30 98 cancels are also on the reverse of the envelope. The Battle of Omdurman took place on 2 September, resulting in the death of 48 British soldiers but over 10,000 Dervishes were killed and 16,000 injured. This opened the way for the recapture of Khartoum.

1885 - 1885 envelope to London, endorsed No stamps available with a Korti datestamp on the face, along with a boxed T and 1d tax markings. In the lower left corner it has been initialled and dated 7.2.85. A London MR 9 85 arrival c.d.s. is on the reverse. Although it has only been taxed 1d, which would indicate a soldiers rate rather than an officers, this envelope was probably written by Colonel Brackenburg when near Merawai during the Khartoum Relief Expedition. A very interesting item in fine condition.
