1894 Swaziland 1894 envelope to Wimbledon, England, bearing a Transvaal 1d and two 2d, paying the 5d double rate of 2½d per ½ oz, cancelled by squared circle DARKTON SWAZIEL 9 DEC 94 datestamps. On the back are Johannesburg 12 DEC and Cape Town 15 DEC 94 transit datestamps and a Wimbledon 4 JAN 95 arrival c.d.s. Transvaal stamps overprinted 'Swazieland' had been invalidated from 7 November 1894, but the cancellers with 'SWAZIEL' at the foot remained in use until they were replaced with cancellers inscribed 'Z.A.R.' from 20 February 1995. This cover falls into the window when Transvaal stamps were in use but the canceller had not been changed, a period of only three months. A very fine and scarce double rate cover. £1350.00 Reference: K3096

c1962 Swaziland 1962c 5c on 6d registered envelope to Port Elizabeth with a 2½c added, that was most likely posted in a post box rather than being handed in over the counter. The postage for a registered letter would have been 3½c plus 4c registration, so it was correctly paid, but as it was posted out of course a tax of 5c was raised and POOC TAX and 'Posted Out Of Course' written by hand alongside a circular 'T' tax mark with 5c in manuscript in the centre. The stamps were uncancelled but a boxed PIGGS PEAK registration handstamp was applied. An interesting cover. £40.00 Reference: K2878

1896 Swaziland 1896 envelope to Stutterheim, Cape, franked with two pairs of ½d's cancelled DARKTON 12 AUG 96. Pretoria transit and Stutterheim 18 AUG 96 arrival cancels are on the back. On 6 September 1895 the letter rate to the ZAR was reduced to 1d per ½ oz. It would appear as though the sender, Grosvenor Darke (the founder of Darkton) initially put a pair of ½d's on to pay what he thought was the 1d rate, but postage to other neighbouring states was still 2d and so an additional pair of ½d's was affixed and cancelled later that day. A very fine and scarce cover. £1150.00 Reference: K2411
