1918 Tanganyika - 1918 envelope, very slightly truncated at the left, sent most probably by and Indian soldier to Amani with two3c cancelled TANGA 28 JU 18. A boxed PASSED BY CENSOR TANGA is on the face of the cover, on the back is a Tanga JY 2 18 datestamp. The cover was left at the Tanga Post Office for 4 days to receive this second cancel. Unusual.

The KWA can be clearly made out, but the rest of the cancel appears to have been overstruck by another datestamp. . This cancel was used at KILWA.

1916 Tanganyika - 1916 picture post card ( View of Hotel Moshi, Kilimanjaro) to Scotland from a soldier in the Field Postal Corps, 1st Mounted Brigade, endorsed On Active Service, with an F.P.O. NO. 71 25 MA 16. datestamp. A hexagonal OPENED BY CENSOR /  UNDER MARTIAL LAW cachet is on the card, which has a few minor edge faults. F.P.O. No 71 was most probably around Salaita at that time. After the defeat at the Battle of Salaita Hill on 12 February 1916, which was the first large-scale engagement to involve British, South African, Rhodesian and Indian troops, the allied troops withdrew, but in early March occupied the town after a further engagement. This cancel is known used there for a short period from 10th March. A scarce card from there.

On the front of the cover is an octagonal OPENED BY CENSOR UNDER MARTIAL LAW handstamp. This is only known on military mail from March to October 1916 and was at Base Office B. An uncommon item.

Proud, in his book Postal History of German East Africa, is unsure as to whether this 301 cancel was at Korogwe or Mombo and has it as closed from 31 May 16, re-opening 7 September 16. This card proves that the number 301 was in use at Mombo in July 1916. A fine proving card for this town.
