1931 cover to Napier franked with a 1d cancelled GISBORNE FE 12 1931 that has a violet straight line 'EMERGENCY EARTHQUAKE AIR MAIL' cachet at the lower left corner and the signature of the pilot Flt. Lt. D. M. Allan. At 10.47a.m.on Tuesday 3rd February 1931 a devastating earthquake (7.8 on the Richter scale) hit Napier and Hastings, killing 256 people. Due to damage in the area considerable use of aeroplanes was made to convey mail. No direct flights were possible to Napier and this cover was flown to Hastings for onward transmission by road.
