1940 envelope from Osaka, Japan, to Baghdad, franked at a double weight, the stamps cancelled 15.11.14. (1940) The cover has bilingual “FOUND OPEN or DAMAGED AND OFFICIALLY SECURED” labels affixed on all four sides, (Drummond OS4) which have been tied by BAGHDAD 18 DEC 40 datestamps. A very uncommon item. As this corresponds with another damaged registered cover from the same sender to the same addressee on the same dates, it is possible that the mail was either stolen or ransacked by someone. A scarce item.
1920 registered envelope to Madras, India, with a pair of 1a on 20pa on the back, each tied by the very scarce KUT CAMP (IRAQ) 25 MAR 20. (Proud D2, this the earliest date of use recorded) The two 1a stamps pay the registration as the military post was free. The cover has been trimmed a little at the left, but this does not detract. A very rare cover.
