1887 New Zealand - 1887 envelope to the CAPE OF GOOD HOPE with 3 x 1/-, a 6d and 2d, paying a four times letter rate of 3/8d, tied by barred 2 numeral cancels. A blue crayon 2 oz is on the font of the cover, that has been endorse Per 1st Mail Steamer. From UPPER HUTT 21 JE 87 there are also Wellington 21 JE Plymouth AU 6, Cape Town SP 1 and Worcester SP 2 87 transit and arrival backstamps. A few minor outer edge faults but a remarkable item to a very scarce destination.

1866 New Zealand - 1866 cover to Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales, endorsed via Panama with a 6d tied by an indistinct numeral canceller. An endorsement at the left is from Canterbury, Sept 5 1866. On the back is a CHRISTCHURCH SE 6 66 datestamp and a Haverfordwest OC 29 66 arrival cancel. This letter sailed on the “Phoebe” that left Lyttelton on September 6 arriving Wellington September 7. From there it went on the “Rakaia” departing September 9, the third voyage on the Panama route, and arrived at Panama on October 6 and from there to London, via St Thomas, on the “Shannon”.

1906 New Zealand - 1906 picture post card (Akaroa) to a crew member on H. M. S. Flora, China Station, with a 2½d cancelled AKAROA 21 NO 06. A Victoria Hong Kong 28 DE 06 cancel is on the card. H.M.S. Flora was an Astraea class Cruiser, built in 1893. China Station was based in Hong Kong and an important base for projecting power in the Pacific and also for patrolling the Chinese Rivers. A scarce incoming card from New Zealand to the China Station.

1871 New Zealand - 1871 envelope to Christchurch bearing a 2d, correctly paying the local rate, tied by a barred 16 oblitorator with a KAIAPOI MY 9 71 datestamp on the back. A Christchurch arrival canceller of the same date is also on the back of the cover. On the front is a very fine strike of the scarce TOO LATE handstamp of Kaiapoi. The reason for this handstamp is that although it arrived in Christchurch the same day it was posted, it had missed the first delivery. Kaiapoi is about ten miles north of Christchurch. A very fine and scarce cover.

1900 Boer War - 1900 New Zealand Contingent envelope to Wellington endorsed On Active Service 4th Cont. N. Z. R. R. with a Field Post Office DE 7 00 datestamp. The cover was taxed and a New Zealand 1d postage due affixed and tied. The sender, John Ross, 1032, has signed the cover at the lower left and the officer commanding has also signed alongside. A Wellington arrival cancel is on the back of the cover. Private John Ross was from Clutha and was in the 4th Contingent that sailed for South Africa on the Monowai on 20th March 1900. He served for 1 year and 123 days in South Africa before being shipped back to New Zealand. He re-enlisted with the 10th Contingent this time as a Sergeant on April 14 1902 and served 87 days in South Africa. He was awarded the Queen’s S.A. Medal and Clasps “Cape Colony”, “Transvaal”, “Rhodesia”, “South Africa 1901” and “South Africa 1902” medals.
