JAPANESE OCCUPATION. 1944 envelope sent locally within Brunei, franked with an overprinted 20c, (SG J29) cancelled by a Japanese datestamp of 8. 11. 2604. (1944) An arrival datestamp of 9. 11.2604. is alongside. This cover comes from the estate of a local lawyer who served in the U.S. Army from June 1942 to March 1946. A scarce stamp on cover, catalogued by Stanley Gibbons at £1250.

1892 envelope to Belgium franked with a 6c on 8c and a 2c cancelled by an oval of dots (Proud K2 – State 2) A red SANDAKAN 21 FE 1892 datestamp is on the front of the cover, on the back is an Ostend 28.3.92. arrival c.d.s. The cover has been unevenly trimmed at the top when opened. B.P.A. Certificate.

1898 envelope to Holland franked on the back with an 18c and 2c, paying the 20c double letter rate for a letter between a ½ oz and 1 oz, cancelled SANDAKAN 24 JU 1898. A Roermand 3 AUG 98 arrival datestamp is also on the back of the cover. A rare commercial usage of the 18c stamp. Ex Burrus.

1931 registered envelope to Hong Kong franked on the back with a 12c and 6c cancelled LAHAD DATU MY 1931. Sandakan 9 MY transit and Singapore 18 MY 1931 arrival cancels are also on the back of the cover that has been slightly truncated at the left.

1919 underpaid envelope to the U.S.A. franked with a 6c cancelled SANDAKAN 15 MAY 1919. As the rate to the USA should have been 10c per ½oz, the cover was taxed with a triangulat 'T' tax mark struck next to the stamp. (Proud UP4) On arrival in the US a further tax mark was applied with a manuscript '4' inserted. Cover faults including a piece cut out of the back, and the backflap missing, but a good example of taxed mail.

1928 registered envelope to England franked with a pair of 4c, a 5c, 3c and 2c on the front and two 3c and a 6c on the back, paying a 30c rate, cancelled by the large JESSELTON B. N. B. 19 SEP 1928 datestamps. (Proud R10) A London 20 OC 28 arrival cancel is on the back of the cover. An uncommon registration label with the letter 'K' is at the upper left, this type unrecorded by Proud.

1920 4c post card to France with a 'T' tax mark that was probably applied in Kuching, cancelled MUKAH 13 NOV 1920. Kuching 15 NOV and Singapore 19 NO 20 transit cancels are on the front of the card. Why it should have received a tax mark is unclear as the rate for a post card to a non Commonwealth country was 4c, so this was correctly rated.
1937 envelope to Kuching franked with a 2c and 3c, paying the 5c internal letter rate, cancelled MATU 11 NOV 1937. (Proud D3) A Kuching 19 NOV 1937 arrival c.d.s. is on the back. Matu was a small coastal town 35 miles north east of Sibu.

1901 envelope to Manila, Philippines, endorsed 'pr S. S. Rajahuro', franked with a 2c and two 4c, paying the 10c rate for a ½ oz letter to a Commonwealth country, cancelled SANDAKAN 6 MR 1901. A Manila MAR 9 01 arrival cancel is on the back.

1936 air mail envelope to England, endorsed 'Imperial' bearing a 25c cancelled KUDAT 21 JUL 1936. A Jesselton 22 JUL transit c.d.s. is on the back of the cover. The new 25c rate for mail up to a ½ oz on Imperial Airways was introduced in 1935.

1936 unsealed envelope to Czechoslovakia endorsed 'Printed Matter Only' bearing a 2c and 1c to pay the 3c rate for printed matter up to 2 oz, cancelled SANDAKAN 25 MAY 1936. An unusual destination.

1905 picture post card (The Memorial Tower, Sandakan) to the USA bearing a 4c, overprinted 'BRITISH PROTECTORATE' cancelled SANDAKAN 29 MAR 1905. Hong Kong 14 AP and Seattle MY 10 transit cancels also tie the stamp. An arrival c.d.s. of 15 MAY 05 is at the left of the card. An early post card from North Borneo.

1894 1c postal card, locally addressed and cancelled KUDAT 6 JAN 94, but then forwarded to Singapore where it arrived on January 22. A blue manuscript '2' is on the front of the card denoting the extra to be paid as the rate to Singapore for a post card was 3c at that time. (No deficiency charged) Unusual.
