1878 Tasmania - 1878 mourning envelope to Bridgenorth, England, endorsed via Brindisi bearing a pair of 6d and two 2d, paying a double letter rate, cancelled by barred 34 obliterators with a FINGAL 3 AU 1878 datestamp alongside. On the back are Launceston AU 4 and Bridgenorth SP 20 78 transit and arrival cancels. A fine double rate cover.

1897 Tasmania - 1897 unstamped envelope to Broken Hill, N.S.W. With a red TASMANIA / OFFICIAL PAID handstamp along with a HOBART SE 9 1897 duplex canceller. The cover has the signature of Stafford Bird at the upper right. This Official Paid free frank privilege was used by House of Assembly Members. Bolton Stafford Bird was the member for Franklin and was Postmaster General from 29.3.1887 to 17.8.1892. Bird was a Tasmanian representative at the Federation Conference, held in Melbourne from 6 to 14 February 1890, when leading politicians from the six Australian colonies and New Zealand affirmed the desirability of ‘an early union under the crown’ and committed themselves to persuading their governments to send delegates to a convention which would ‘consider and report’ on a scheme for a federal constitution. An interesting cover from a prominent Tasmanian.

1891 Tasmania - 1891 triple weight cover to Germany bearing a strip of three 2d green and a strip of three 6d dull claret (S.G. 143) tied by HOBART SE 21 91 duplex cancellers. The rate then was 8d per ½ oz, but if it had been posted ten days later it would only have cost 7½d to send as the rate was reduced to 2½d per ½ oz on 1 October 1891. A fine and late pre UPU usage.

Tasmania - A cover to Launceston, possibly posted locally, that has had the stamps either removed or they have fallen off, with a good strike of the LOOSE SHIP LETTER / TO PAY with 2D inserted in pencil. A red B in a circle and a red  3/36 T in circle are the only other markings on the cover besides a horizontal violet O. An interesting cover!
