1932 Cyprus - 1932 Civil Censorship envelope, used internally on the island bearing a Piastre cancelled NICOSIA DEC 32. The cover has an OPENED BY CENSOR label at the top. On 21 October 1931 riots erupted in Cyprus and the ensuing events culminated in the burning down of the house of the British Governor in Nicosia. The reason for this action was the crowds conviction that their leaders were being held imprisoned by the British authorities. The Governor escaped to a private house where he proclaimed martial law. In the months that followed, about 2,000 people were convicted of crimes in connection with the struggle for union with Greece. Britain reacted by imposing harsh restrictions. Military reinforcements were dispatched to the island and the constitution suspended The agitation was an open expression of the desire by the Greek Cypriots of union with Greece. During the civil unrest between 1931 and 1936, a small portion of selected mail was opened and censored. A scarce cover from this unrest period.
