1918 Egypt / Tanganyika - 1918 censored envelope to Amani, District Tanga, East Africa, sent by R. Manneschmidt, P.O.W. No. 19312 to his wife from the MAADI P.O.W. Camp, Cairo. On the front of the cover is a Field Post Office S M 2 17 JA 18 datestamp and From Prisoner of War and boxed Free cachets. The cover has a triangular Passed By Censor 3990 handstamp, applied in Egypt, and a circular Passed Censor C E. A. handstamp, applied at Tanga. On the back of the cover are Cairo 20.1.18, Base Office Aden I.E.F. 6.FEB 18 and Tanga 21 DE 18 transit and arrival cancels. There is no explanation as to why it took over ten months to get from Aden to Tanga.

An oval PASSED BY CENSOR No. 13 cachet is on the front of the card along with an arrival c.d.s. of 10 JAN 18. The Sidi Bishr Camp opened in January 1917 and internees from the Ras-El-Tin camp were transferred there. These were later joined by P.O.W.s from German East Africa and Palestine. This card was written by P.O.W. No. 620.

On the front is a BASE ARMY POST OFFICE Z 30 JU 18 canceller is at the upper right along with a P. of W. Camp / SIDI BISHR and triangular censor cachet. The Sidi Bishr Camp opened in January 1917 and internees from the Ras-El-Tin camp were transferred there. These were later joined by P.O.W.s from German East Africa and Palestine. Captain Erhart was in the medical corps in German East Africa before being captured.

1936 - S S WINKFIELD. 1936 envelope from Alexandria (21 AUG 36) to Birmingham that has been damaged by water, resulting in stamps being washed off the cover. On the reverse is a two line ‘DAMAGED BY / SEA WATER’ cachet. This incident was on board the S S Winkfield, which took on water somewhere during its journey, probably in the Mediterranean. The S S Winkfield was built by Pickersgill & Son at Sunderland in 1919 and owned by the British India Steam Navigation Company. It was initially used ( 1919) as a troop ship and later as a merchant ship between London and Bombay. In May 1941 when approaching the Thames Estuary, it was mined and sunk. An interesting and until now, unrecorded ship incident.

1905 - S.S. Cairo - On 5th March 1905 the S. S. Cairo en route from Genoa to Alexandria, went aground when approaching the harbour at Alexandria, Egypt, and was totally wrecked. Most of the mails were washed away but 51 bags were rescued. The surviving mail received a bilingual two line handstamp, in French and English. The English reads  SAVED FROM THE WRECK OF S. S. CAIRO.  This picture post card originated in Quebec, Canada, an unusual origination for this wreck.
