1855 Victoria - 1855 outer wrapper to Sydney with four 1ds, brick-red shade, Stone 2, 7th printing, margins large to touched, tied by 1/V obliterators of MELBOURNE with an OC 16 cancel on the back. Also on the back is a SHIP LETTER SYDNEY OC 19 1855 cancel. A few faults but an unusual and attractive franking.

1870 Victoria - 1855 outer wrapper to Sydney with a pair of 3d deep blue on poorer quality paper, Stone D, ninth printing, positions 5 & 6, with very large margins other than at the top right corner where just touched. The stamps have been tied by the 2/V canceller of GEELONG with a SE 17 1855 cancel on the back. Melbourne SE 18 and Sydney SE 21 cancels also on the back. An ADVERTISED / UNCLAIMED h/s is on the front of the letter. Ex Charles Lathrop Pack (1944) and Dale / Lichtenstein (1990)

1874 Victoria - 1874 folded letter to France, endorsed Via Brindisi with a 1d, a single and a strip of 5 x 2d and a 9d, paying the 1/10d rate for a letter under a ½ oz, cancelled MELBOURNE MY 19 74.  The 1d and the 9d have been lifted and replaced to check the watermarks. A most attractive and colourful item.

1857 Victoria /Ship Incident - 1857 envelope to Leamington, Warwickshire, endorsed Per R.M.S. “Oneida” via Marseille, franked with a 6d cancelled by a barred obliterator with a MELBOURNE JA 26 1857. datestamp on the back. A London 4 MY 1857 datestamp is on the front of the cover and a Leamington 4 MY 57 arrival c.d.s. is on the back. The Oneida sailed from Melbourne on January 28 with 10,156 oz of gold on board (£50,000) and 15 boxes of mail. On 23 February she put into King Georges Sound with engine trouble. The gold, passengers and the mail were transferred to the European which sailed from King Georges Sound on 21 March and arrived at Suez on 19 April. The total journey took 98 days, well beyond the normal 65 – 70 days this trip should have taken.
