1857 envelope to Leamington, Warwickshire, endorsed 'Per R.M.S. “Oneida” via Marseille', franked with a 6d cancelled by a barred obliterator with a MELBOURNE JA 26 1857. datestamp on the back. A London 4 MY 1857 datestamp is on the front of the cover and a Leamington 4 MY 57 arrival c.d.s. is on the back. The 'Oneida' sailed from Melbourne on January 28 with 10,156 oz of gold on board (£50,000) and 15 boxes of mail. On 23 February she put into King George's Sound with engine trouble. The gold, passengers and the mail were transferred to the 'European' which sailed from King George's Sound on 21 March and arrived at Suez on 19 April. The total journey took 98 days, well beyond the normal 65 – 70 days this trip should have taken.
1880's ½d newspaper wrapper (H&G E4) from Melbourne to Ceres, endorsed 'Newspapers only'. A part MELBOURNE / VICTORIA duplex canceller obliterates the stamp.
1869 quadruple rate cover to France franked with a 2d, 6d and a pair of 1/- paying the 2/8d rate, cancelled by barred oval '9' duplex cancels of BEECHWORTH dated DE 4 69. On the reverse are Melbourne DE 7 and Paris 23 JA 70 transit cancels. Fine, the only known quadruple rate cover to France recorded.
1856 outer wrapper to Geelong franked with a 1d lilac & rose (just touched at top) and a 3d deep indigo, (SG 28b & 31d) tied by a '2' in bars obliterator of Ballarat with an OCT 7 1856 datestamp on the reverse along with a Geelong OC 8 1856 arrival canceller. An attractive item.
1859 double rate outer wrapper to France, endorsed 'pr Bombay R M S' bearing an 1857 rouletted 2d grey-lilac, an 1858 rouletted 6d blue and an 1859 1/- blue (SG 47a, 73a and 81) all lightly cancelled by barred '1' obliterators of Melbourne, with a c.d.s. of SP 17 59 on the reverse. There are various transit and arrival cancellations. An exceptionally fine and very rare three issue franking.
1895 stationery envelope with two 1d embossed stamps cancelled by the CARLTON 538 barred duplex of MR 25 95. Fine.
