1794 Jamaica / Great Britain - 1794 (24 July) entire from Kingston to Edinburgh with two 1/1, (both crossed out), a 2 and a 2/3 charge marks on the face. A fine strike of the horseshoe FALMOUTH SHIP LRE is on the front of the entire, on the back is a smudged Bishop mark.

1791 Jamaica - 1791 folded letter to Madeira dated March 20 1791 that was sent privately to London with a notation at the upper left “Try Mr Gordon, Percy Street or Jamaica Coffee House”. A manuscript 1/1 charge is on the front of the letter along with a PORTMOUTH SHIP-LRE handstamp. On the back of the letter is a Bishop mark of 2 June and a Madeira receiving manuscript notation for 8 July 1791. An interesting item using a Coffee House as a forwarding agent.

1821 Jamaica - 1821 folded letter to France, written from Kingston and dated 8th January 1821. A manuscript 3/4 rate is on the front of the letter along with a fine strike of the rare circular JAMAICA PAID JA 9 821 datestamp. (Proud PD4 – value x 4,000) At the lower right is a red tombstone PAID 3 MR, applied at London, and a straight line Angleterre. A very rare item in fine condition.

1843 Jamaica - 1843 (5th August) stampless outer wrapper to the U.S. Charge dAffairs, Bogota, endorsed “Care of the U. S. Consul Cartagena”, carried on the ship “Corrina” with an endorsement at the lower left. A “Forwarded by R. M. Harrison, U.S. Consul, Kingston, Jamaica.” is on the back of the wrapper and a red oval CARTAGENA DEBE and red 4 postage due handstamps are on the front. Due to THE GREAT FIRE OF KINGSTON, which started in an iron foundry at noon on the 26th of August and destroyed a considerable part of the city, with over 30 blocks being demolished, regular forwarding agents were put out of action, but the U.S. Consul was able to forward mail.

There is an arrival DEC 29 1801 datestamp and a fine large oval framed PD handstamp in purple. This handstamp (Proud PD 2) was, until this letter was found, only known in black ink, and there are only one or two known. This purple handstamp is unique. An exceptionally fine and rare item.

This (Proud PS4) handstamp was only recorded used between September 1821 and July 1822 and Proud rates it at 4000 points. 1917 Jamaica - 1917 picture post card to Holland franked with a 1d tied by a KINGSTON OC 13 1917 roller canceller. A violet boxed PASSED BY NAVAL CENSOR with the initials of the censor inside has been applied at the left. Two Australian warships, the H.M A..S, Melbourne and H.M.A.S. Sydney, were deployed to the West Indies early in the war and it was from one of these vessels that this censor handstamp was applied.
