1831 entire from BAHIA, BRAZIL, to Douglas, N.B. dated 28 July 1831, endorsed 'per Garland'. A superb strike of the scarce 'MISSENT TO DUMFRIES' handstamp is at the upper left of the letter. Also on the front is a manuscript charge mark and an 'Add ½d' handstamp. A poor SHIP LETTER LIVERPOOL handstamp is on the reverse along with a DUMFRIES 23 SEP 1831 arrival datestamp. Very interesting contents re the conditions in Bahia, including assassinations and robberies and comments on the Portuguese living there, as well as accounts of the Murray family. A fine and very scarce item.
