1886 Falkland Islands

Ref: GW2642
  • £3500.00

1886 envelope to Syracuse, U.S.A. franked with a 4d tied by a cork obliterator (Heijtz cork 6x4, used between October 2 and December 17 1886) with a FALKLAND ISLANDS DE 16 1886 datestamp alongside. A Syracuse MR 12 1887 arrival c.d.s. is on the back. This cover was on the Kosmos steamer “Theben” which left Port Stanley on 17 December, but the mails were delayed in Punta Arenas before eventually being transferred to the “Uarda” for the homeward journey. This explains the late arrival in Syracuse after an 85 day journey. The envelope has the embossed government seal on the back and interestingly the “On Her Majesty's Service” has been obliterated as it was a private letter – not an official one. A fine and rare early cover from the Falkland Islands.
