1894 Swaziland

Ref: K3096
  • £1100.00

1894 envelope to Wimbledon, England, bearing a Transvaal 1d and two 2d, paying the 5d double rate of 2½d per ½ oz, cancelled by squared circle DARKTON SWAZIEL 9 DEC 94 datestamps. On the back are Johannesburg 12 DEC and Cape Town 15 DEC 94 transit datestamps and a Wimbledon 4 JAN 95 arrival c.d.s. Transvaal stamps overprinted 'Swazieland' had been invalidated from 7 November 1894, but the cancellers with 'SWAZIEL' at the foot remained in use until they were replaced with cancellers inscribed 'Z.A.R.' from 20 February 1995. This cover falls into the window when Transvaal stamps were in use but the canceller had not been changed, a period of only three months. A very fine and scarce double rate cover.
