Ref: K1129
  • £460.00

1900 censored envelope to Cape Town, franked with an Orange Free State 1d cancelled WINBURG JA 18 00. An oval POSTMEESTER GENERAAL, ORANJE-VRYSTAAT with the coat of arms in the centre handstamp has been applied in Bloemfontein, which was the way of censoring civilian mail during the early part of the War. (From November 1899 to February 1900) The cover went to Delagoa Bay and then Durban where it was censored and resealed with Type 2c tape with the variety COAT OF ARMS INVERTED. (Rare, only about 6 or 7 recorded). Although the pre War rate to Cape Town was 1d, this letter was deemed underpaid and a 3 tax handstamp applied. A very scarce cover.
