1900 unused Transvaal 1d newspaper wrapper, overprinted V. R. I. At Lydenburg, with the variety 'Long tailed 'R'. After the occupation of Lydenburg by British troops on 6 September 1900, difficulties were experienced in obtaining “V. R. I. “ overprinted material from Pretoria, mainly due to the Boer guerilla action in the area. Under the supervision of Captain Labouchere, stamps and postal stationary that was found in the Lydenburg post office was overprinted 'V. R. I.' at a local print house for use by the British forces. 106 1d wrappers were overprinted, and only a very few exist with the long tailed 'R'. A very scarce wrapper.
