On 5th March 1905 the S. S. Cairo en route from Genoa to Alexandria, went aground when approaching the harbour at Alexandria, Egypt, and was totally wrecked. Most of the mails were washed away but 51 bags were rescued. The surviving mail received a bilingual two line handstamp, in French and English. The English reads 'SAVED FROM THE WRECK OF S. S. 'CAIRO'. This picture post card originated in Quebec, Canada, an unusual origination for this wreck.
