1910 - General Chanzy

Ref: G2137
  • £250.00

The steamer General Chanzy sailed from Marseille to Algiers on 9 February 1910. It was swept off course in a heavy storm and struck the rocks off the north-west coast of Minorca at about 8 a.m. on 10 February. The ship was totally destroyed when the boiler exploded and of the one hundred and sixty passengers and crew, only one, Marcel Radez, survived. The vessel could not be salvaged but a few bags of mail, all seriously damaged, were washed ashore a few days later. A two line violet cachet 'NAUFRAGE DU / GENERAL CHANZY' was applied to the recovered mail. This badly water damaged envelope from Paris to Constantine, Algeria, has a good strike of the cachet.
