1944 self addressed philatelic 'Operation Tabarin' first day cover with a 6d cancelled SOUTH SHETLANDS 5 FEB 1944. Prior to the start of the WWII German aircraft had dropped markers with swastikas across Queen Maud Land in an attempt to create a territorial claim. Operation Tabarin was a military undertaking by the Admiralty and the Colonial Office in 1943 to establish a permanent British presence in the Antarctic. These bases were the first ever to be constructed in Antarctica. A base was established during February near the abandoned Norwegian whaling station on Deception Island. Andrew Taylor, the sender, was the surveyor on the exhibition.
