CHANNEL ISLANDS. 1944 German Radio Message Card with a WILHELMSHAVEN 16.11.44 datestamp. After the Allied invasion of France in June 1944, all links between the Channel Islands and the Continent were broken, apart from a few infrequent Luftwaffe flights. About once a month the besieged soldiers were able to send a message by radio to their relatives. These were known as 'Kameradschaftfunk' or 'Funknachrichten Karte'. For the 'Festung Dunkirchen' and 'Festung Kanalinselin' a common radio card was used, and depending on the where-abouts of the sender, either 'Kanalinselin' or 'Dunkirchen' was deleted. For the Channel Islands there were at least 12 different types of cards, Texts were standardised and a soldier could choose one of the several texts available. The information that arrived by radio in Wilhelmshaven was then transferred to these cards and they were then passed on to the German postal service for onward transmission. This 'Funknachrichtenkarte' card has no reference to the Channel Islands printed on it, but this card, FNK Type No. 8 had 'Kanalinselin den' typewritten on the reverse. This card is rare, and in extremely fine condition.
