1944 cover to New York franked with a 20c tied GENERAL POST OFFICE 18 SE 44. A fancy violet triangular 'PASSED BY CENSOR 98 MAURITIUS' handstamp is on the front of the cover which has been sent from P.O. Box 1000, which was the Box used by the Jewish Internment Centre. This camp at Beau Bassin housed 1580 Jewish men, women and children, mainly from Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland who fled Nazi persecution and were prevented from landing in Palestine in 1940. They arrived at Port Louis in two Dutch ships on 26th December 1940. Cover slightly trimmed at top.
