SIR LOWRY’S PASS SOUTH AFRICA. The Union Airways De Havilland Puss Moth ‘The Springbok’ piloted by Captain William Frost Davenport, when flying from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town on Friday 13 November 1931, the pilot encountered a severe storm. The aircraft went out of control following structural failure. A wing failed in flight due to the heavy turbulence in the storm. The wing was located 229 meters from the rest of the aircraft. It seems turbulence exceeded the wing's design. The aircraft crashed on the slopes of a mountain and caught fire 18 miles from Cape Town. The pilot and the two passengers were killed. This cover has a mimeo explanatory note with the rare error ‘1913’ instead of ‘1931’. This has been corrected by hand when signed. A rare item. (Stanford 311113)
