1939 RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL. The Pan American Airways seaplane struck a dry dock in Guanabara Bay, Rio De Janeiro, when landing and was demolished. The pilots and 14 of the 16 occupants were killed. Of the 100 lbs. of mail carried, about half was salvaged in burned or water-soaked condition. Recovered mail received a cachet ACCIDENTE DE AVIAO. Sismondo certificate.
