1954 JAMAICA BAY, NEW YORK. Italian Air Lines Flight 451 made three attempts to land at Idlewild Airport on December 18th and on the fourth approach, fell short of Runway No. 4 and came down over a 2,000-foot long pier and sank in Jamaica Bay. The crew of 12 and 22 passengers were killed; 6 passengers survived. The recovered mail was damaged by water and mud.
