1954 SINGAPORE. On March 13th, the British Airways Lockheed 749A Constellation “Belfast”, on a flight from Sydney - Darwin, Australia – Jakarta, Indonesia - Singapore – London, crashed on the runway at Singapore when landing and caught fire. Twelve passengers and one crew member were killed. This cover from Melbourne to England has had the boxed cachet ‘SALVAGED MAIL / AIRCRAFT CRASH / SINGAPORE 13.3.1954’ applied when the cover was still wet from water extinguishing the flames.
