On the 21st January 1948 pilot M E Thayer flying an Eastern Airlines flight from Miami to Boston, via Newark, attempted an emergency landing at Logan Airport, Boston, but skidded on an icy runway and crashed into a snow bank injuring 14 passengers and crew and demolishing the aircraft. 539 lbs. of
mail were salvaged, of which 440 lbs. was damaged and found in wet, burned or charred condition. This cover that has an official post office explanatory label originated in Havana, Cuba, and was posted there on 19th January. (Sanford Ref. 480121)
