1939 ‘CENTURION’. On 12th June 1939 the Imperial Airways Short S23 C Class Flying Boat “Centurion” was caught in a severe gust of wind when coming into land on the Hooghly River near Calcutta. The plane crashed and the passengers and crew were rescued. Much of the mail was severely water damaged. This cover from Victoria has a bright pink two line cachet ‘SALVAGED MAIL / EX CENTURION’. On the back is a London Officially Sealed label.
