1939 ‘CENTURION’. On 12th June 1939 the Imperial Airways Short S23 C Class Flying Boat “Centurion” was caught in a severe gust of wind when coming into land on the Hooghly River near Calcutta. The plane crashed and the passengers and crew were rescued. Much of the mail was severely water damaged. This cover from Sydney has a weak two line cachet ‘SALVAGED MAIL / EX CENTURION’, but an addition boxed cachet ‘DAMAGED BY / SEA WATER / IN AIRPLANE / ACCIDENT’ has been added.
