1939 ‘CENTURION’. On 12th June 1939 the Imperial Airways Short S23 C Class Flying Boat “Centurion” was caught in a severe gust of wind when coming into land on the Hooghly River near Calcutta. The plane crashed but the passengers and crew were rescued. This cover from Melbourne to London has had the stamp washed off in the crash. The two line cachet ‘SALVAGED MAIL / EX CENTURION’ has the error ‘’D’ reversed in ‘SALVAGED. ’
