1939 “CHALLENGER” MOZAMBIQUE. On the 1st May 1939, the Imperial Airways Short S23 Class Flying Boat “Challenger” struck a boat while coming in to land at Lumbo, in Mozambique, killing two members of the crew. The mail was recovered and forwarded on the flying boat ‘Canopus’. Mail was processed on arrival in South Africa. This cover from Southampton has the boxed two line bilingual – English and Afrikaans - explanatory
cachet. In the lower left corner is a circular handstamp with a knight in armour with a sword and 'CHALLENGER' written around the top. Could this have been an envelope from on board the plane?
