1961 CHICAGO IL. On September 17 1961 the Northwest Airlines flight from Chicago to Tampa, Florida crashed in a swamp near the southwest corner of O’Hare airport, one minute after take-off. The five crew members and thirty two passengers were killed. Mail was badly burned and processed at Chicago for forwarding after application of an explanatory cachet ‘DAMAGED IN HANDLING / IN THE POSTAL SERVICE’.
