1954 ‘COMET’ OFF ELBA ITALY. On 10 January 1954 a B.O.A.C. Comet, G-ALYP, broke up in the air 20 minutes after leaving Rome Ciampino Airport due to metal fatigue over Elba while en route from the Far East to London. A fishing boat picked up some of the mail from the water the following day and took it to Genoa. This Singapore Air Letter was posted 9.1.54. and has a fine example of the cachet ‘DAMAGED BY SEAWATER / COMET MAIL.’ applied on arrival in England.
