The United Air Lines flight from San Francisco to Cheyenne on October 8 1946 burst into flames on landing at Fort Warren, near Cheyenne, destroying the plane and seriously damaging the mail. A four line cachet was applied to salvaged mail ‘DAMAGED DUE TO AIR MAIL / INTERRUPTION NEAR / CHEYENNE, WY, /OCT 8 1946. The strip of 5 coil stamps paid a triple weight rate. (Sanford Ref. 461008)
