1950 HELICOPTER CRASH, BELGIUM. A Sabena Bell 47 helicopter, operating on the postal carrying service between Antwerp and Brussels, developed engine trouble at an altitude of 20 metres after taking off from Liege on the afternoon of 15 September 1950 and crashed into the River Meuse near Pont du Commerce. Later that afternoon, around 5.30 p.m. the helicopter was lifted from the river and the mail recovered. This cover from England has had the stamp washed off. It has the explanatory cachet ‘COURRIER HELICOPTERE / ACCIDENTE.’ A scarce cover from this incident.
