1962 JAMAICA BAY NEW YORK. On March 1st, the American Airlines Boeing 707, on a flight from New York to Los Angeles, turned suddenly after taking off from Idlewild Airport and plunged into a marsh in Jamaica Bay. The cause was a rudder control system malfunction, producing jaw, sideslip and roll, leading to a loss of control, from which recovery action was not possible. All eighty seven passengers and eight crew members were killed. Aboard was 500 lbs. of mail, all of which was salvaged in wet and/or burned condition and forwarded after application of a “DAMAGED IN HANDLING / IN THE POSTAL SERVICE” cachet. (Sanford 620301
