‘1973 VARIG BOEING NEAR ORLY AIRPORT, FRANCE’. The Varig Boeing 707 left Rio de Janeiro for Paris at 11.30 p.m. on 11 July 1973. Just prior to landing at Orly Airport, Paris, a fire broke out on board forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing at Saulx-les-Chartreux, 4km short of Orly. All 133 passengers and crew were killed in the fire. Mailwas badly damaged in the fire. This cover from Parana, Brasil, to London has been badly burned and needed repairing with tape. A two line cachet ‘CORRESPONDANCE ACCIDENTEE / EN COURS DE TRANSPORT’ is on the front of the cover. Also a more detailed explanatory note dated 28 JUIL 1973 was pinned to the front of the cover.
