PACIFIC OCEAN CRASH. On October 16 1956 the Stratocruiser “Sovereign of the Skies” when flying between Honolulu and San Francisco was forced to ditch in the Pacific Ocean approximately 1055 miles south west of San Francisco after two engines failed. All passengers and crew were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard ship “Pontchartrain”. Recovered mail was forwarded from San Francisco with a two line cachet ‘DAMAGED IN HANDLING / IN THE POSTAL SERVICE’. (Sanfotd Ref. 561016)
