1957 PACIFIC OCEAN. On November 9th the Pan American World Airways Boeing Stratocruiser “Romance of the Skies” flew from San Francisco to Honolulu, but ditched into the Pacific Ocean. There were no survivors. Mail salvaged by the U. S. Coast Guard was taken to Los Angeles and processed there
on November 18 & 19. It received a two line cachet ‘DAMAGED IN HANDLING / IN THE POSTAL SERVICE. (Sanford Ref. 571109)
