‘SCIPIO’. On 22 August 1936, the Imperial Airways flying boat “Scipio” crashed due to pilot error at Mirabella Bay, Crete, en route from Alexandria to London with stops at Mirabella Bay and Brindisi. The mail was transported to Athens and forwarded from there. Many different cachets were used to indicate the reason for the damaged mail and the delay. This cover from India, with the stamps washed off, has a black two line ‘DAMAGED BY / SEA WATER’. A sealing label applied in London on arrival is on the back along with a boxed slogan ‘Use The Air Mail And Save Time’
