1954 cover from Rotterdam, Holland (3 SEP) to the U.S.A. that was on the ill-fated KLM 333 flight that crashed immediately after take off into the Shannon River in the early hours of Sunday morning, 5 September. The flight had left Amsterdam for New York the previous evening, with 46 passengers and 10 crew on board and had stopped at Shannon Airport to refuel. Three cabin crew and 25 passengers died. The mail was in the water for a considerable time and suffered water damage. All salvaged mail received a straight line handstamp ‘SALVAGED FROM K.L.M. CRASH AT SHANNON’. This cover has been damaged by water and has part of the back lost in the incident.
