1931 “SOUTHERN SUN”, ALOR SETAR, KEDAH, MALAYA. The Australian National Airways Avro Ten, ‘Southern Sun’, VH-UNA, crashed at Alor Setar, Malaysia, on 26 November 1931 shortly after take- off during the first all-Australia air mail and passenger service from Australia to England. The plane had just taken off when it stalled and crashed into a paddy field. A sodden airfield and power loss to the centre engine were blamed for the accident. All four occupants were injured. This cover from Sydney (17 NOV) is to New York – an uncommon destination for mail from this flight. Backflap missing but has a route map printed on the back of the cover with all the ‘stop off’ towns shown.
